Snake Island Cattle Musters

The grazing of cattle on Snake Island was and still is an event carried out nowadays by farmers, stock & horse men, women and children since the mid 1800's. Getting cattle to and from 'The Island' meant driving them approximately 10 to 12 kilometres across the 'Middle Ground' section of the Lewis Channel at the NE end of Corner Inlet. Getting in the water at Port Welshpool and moving across the swashway in a horseshoe fashion arriving at the most treacherous part of the drive which is the access to Little Snake Island where cattle and horses are required to lift themselves up on to dry land and from there push on to the yards and huts of the bigger Snake Island. In recent years cattle is moved on and off 'The Island' in fortnightly periods that are timed to coincide with low tides and the darkest phase of the moon.

Historic Ports

The historical use of the local ports have been one of the reasons why the small coastal villages along the South East Victoria coastline have endured over the years.

A concerted effort has been made over the past five years to "Save the historical long Jetty" at Port Welshpool.

This jetty was constructed during WW11 to facilitate Naval ships during the war period.

The Port Welshpool Working group has had the Jetty proclaimed a heritage site and applications for funding for it's restoration continue to be submitted.
